Geopolitical chess returns as Cold War rivals collide
When US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met in the Oval Office in February, everything was thrown into disarray. The clash between the two leaders meant there was no guarantee of continued US support for Ukraine. The responsibility for aiding Ukraine (against Russia) had immediately shifted to the European Union (EU), in particular France, Poland, and Germany, the last of which (Germany) had just held snap elections, in part, because of disagreements between the previous governing coalition about support for Ukraine.
For a moment, the West was not only divided about backing Ukraine, but it was also paralyzed.
