Last night, reports began circulating of several ships on fire in the Gulf of Oman, the trade lane sandwiched between Oman and Iran, which flows from the infamous Strait of Hormuz and leads into the Arabian Sea.
It came at a tense moment, as US President Donald Trump had just posted online that “Everybody should immediately evacuate Tehran!,” after which he abruptly left the G7 in Canada early and told his senior national security staff to be ready in the Situation Room when he arrived back at the White House.
Was the incident in the Gulf of Oman connected? Had the Israel-Iran war just spiraled into a naval battle?
Fortunately, it had not. Instead, two oil tankers had collided in the Strait of Hormuz, forcing the Emirati Coast Guard to dispatch personnel for rescue missions. But, the Israel-Iran war may have played some role, opening the door to a possibility many are overlooking.
