Brussels vs. Belgrade: Is Europe on the Brink?

What Serbia's defiance says about the future of Europe

For some time now, Serbia has been on the geopolitical hot seat because of its social unrest following the deadly roof collapse at a train station that killed several people, a train station that was renovated as part of China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). As the social situation has heated up, separately, Belgrade is also seeking sanctions relief from the US over its oil ties to Moscow.

Now, almost out of nowhere, a huge fight has erupted between the EU and Serbia over Serbia’s president Aleksandar Vucic visiting Moscow for Russia’s World War II Victory Parade, which is also expected to draw the Chinese President Xi Jinping and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

For Europe, the situation is so serious that Brussels has threatened to block Serbia’s EU membership bid should Vucic attend. As tensions flare, what is taking place is more than a “regular episode.” Europe has made it clear that Serbia is crossing its red line, and Serbia is making it clear it does not care.

This video unpacks the big geopolitical takeaways from the EU-Serbia face-off.
