“For the first time in 80 years, a foreign power has stepped into Russia. The last time this happened was during World War II.”
In Kursk, a western province in Russia bordering on Ukraine, over 1,000 Ukrainian troops are sending a message to Moscow: a new phase of the war has begun, and it will be waged inside Russia.
Since August 6, Ukrainian forces have been making fighting in Kursk. According to Russia, first it was 300 soldiers. Then, this estimate was revised, to over 1,000 Ukrainian troops.
Now, Kyiv’s forces have reportedly seized control, or are close to seizing, the Sudzha gas metering station (GMS). This is a strategic energy asset. The Suzdha pipeline represents one of two remaining pipelines bringing Russian gas into Europe, alongside TurkStream. The gas from Sudzha, which transits through Ukraine, moves almost 50% of Russian gas exports to Europe.
