Just a short time ago, Canada was in the news for all the right reasons: talented immigration, climate progress, and stable politics, to name a few. Today, Canada is covered differently.
One reason is the growing friction between the US and Canada, as President-elect Donald Trump raises the heat, starting with 25% tariffs on all Canadian (and Mexican) imports and then moving to public jibes, like referring to Canada as the 51st state of America.
Much has been written on this, including by Mr. Geopolitics.
This last part, of Canada’s trade relationship with America, is often trumped around (no pun intended) by Canadians to imply its importance to the US. It is slightly misleading. Canada is a major trading partner of America, but at what scale?
