Before Germany had officially declared a winner in the elections on February 23, Friedrich Merz, the new German chancellor, made a profound set of remarks.

In a television interview, Merz said his objective was to “strengthen Europe” and gain “independence” from the US. He then said that Trump’s policies signal that America has become “indifferent” to what happens to Europe.

Add to this a statement from Michael Roth, the former head of the Committee on Foreign Affairs in the German Bundestag, who warned that “transatlantic relations are over,” and the mood in Germany has swung from being widely pro-America towards a completely different outlook.
