To take on China, the White House is debating a nuclear option. It could activate a set of laws known as the “foreign direct product rule” or FDPR. These rules, created during the Cold War, allow the US to control the trade of goods that were produced with American technology (even if they were made outside the US).

This takes geopolitics into uncharted waters. It brings the US-China fight into the center of global trade.
