Geopolitics is disrupting global supply chains (again). Image generated by AI.

When the pandemic began, supply chains were all the rage.

One of the most infamous examples was when President Trump, during his first term, proposed a plan to β€œrip global supply chains” from China. The goal was to break the Chinese dominance in the production of the most critical goods, from resources to final products. This then manifested itself in supply chain strategies like nearshoring and reshoring.

However, recent geopolitics, from Ukraine to Israel, have redirected supply chains into the background. They have remained in this main position for decades, humming quietly as products and goods circulated the globe.

Now, once again, supply chains are being drawn into geopolitics, giving rise to what I call the β€œgeopolitical supply chain.”
