The new reciprocal tariffs could threaten global trade.

They are not an “ordinary Trump” move targeting one nation (Canada) or a group of countries (BRICS). The new levies go after the entire world simultaneously, meaning America has literally begun to collide with large chunks of the global economy in the blink of an eye. They also signal that diplomatic efforts to stop Trump from taking certain steps have largely failed. Of course, some governments should have realized the futility of their efforts, like the 13 Canadian premiers that traveled to DC, hoping that somehow their “appearance” and “unity” would convince US lawmakers to kill the tariffs.

The reciprocal tariffs push the world into the eye of a new storm,” one that many predicted would take years, as multiple battles snowball and converge, in particular between the US and China.
