A new dimension of the Ukraine-Russia conflict
Last October, as Ukraine prepared for another season of winter fighting, President Volodymyr Zelensky presented a “victory plan” to the West.
The plan had five key points. The first was that Ukraine join NATO. Because of this, the strategy garnered different attention, and the rest of the plan faded into the background. The fourth pillar, however, was quite significant. It proposed giving the West access to Ukraine’s vast resource reserves.
A few months later, the victory plan somewhat resurfaced when US President Donald Trump proposed an unorthodox trade: continued US aid for Ukrainian critical minerals (like rare earths).
The US chief proposed that Kyiv effectively repay US aid, which he put at $375.8 billion, including arms, finance, and other kinds of support. Other calculations put total US aid between $175 billion and $200 billion.
However, the real shocker is the scale of Ukraine’s critical minerals.
